Frequently asked questions

Why is the effective throat 0.707 times the leg size?
For an equal-leg fillet weld, the effective throat is the shortest distance from the root to the weld face, which geometrically works out to 0.707 (that is, cos 45°) times the leg size, per AISC 360 and AWS D1.1.
What's the difference between E70XX and E80XX electrodes?
The number denotes the electrode's classification strength FEXX — E70XX has FEXX = 483 MPa (70 ksi) and E80XX has FEXX = 552 MPa (80 ksi); a higher-strength electrode gives more shear capacity for the same weld size.
Does this include the base metal shear check?
No — this calculates only the nominal shear capacity of the weld metal itself (AISC 360 §J2.4). The connected base metal must also be checked for shear rupture along the fusion faces, which can govern for thinner connected material.
