Why does this treat the sealant as filling a rectangular annular strip?
The sealant volume needed around a penetration is modeled as the perimeter of the opening times the annular gap width times the depth it must fill — a simplified rectangular-strip approximation of the ring-shaped gap around each penetrating item.
Does the firestop depth always equal the wall or floor thickness?
Usually, but not always — some UL-listed firestop systems specify a fill depth different from the full assembly thickness (e.g. sealant only at the top and bottom of a deep gap with backer rod in between). Always follow the depth specified in your exact UL system, not just the raw wall/floor thickness.
