Frequently asked questions

Why does vertical lift cost so much more than horizontal distance?
Pumping concrete upward requires overcoming both friction AND gravity, while horizontal pumping only overcomes friction — that's why a foot of vertical lift is estimated to cost 3-4 times the pressure of a foot of horizontal travel.
Does this account for bends and reducers in the line?
No — each 90° bend or pipe reducer adds its own equivalent-length penalty not included here. For a line with many fittings, add a margin or consult your pump supplier's full equivalent-length chart.
What if the calculated pressure exceeds my pump's rated output?
You'll need a larger pump, a shorter/more direct line routing, a lower-viscosity mix (higher slump or an SCC mix), or a larger-diameter line to reduce friction — consult your pumping contractor before the pour.
