Estimated cost — your price

This site holds no price list for this material — local prices vary too much to publish honestly. Enter your supplier's price and the result is costed with it.

Preliminary estimate, not certified engineering. This tool produces an indicative quantity calculation for planning purposes only — it is not a certified structural analysis, a guaranteed material takeoff, or a substitute for building department approval. Always verify measurements on-site and have a licensed contractor or structural engineer review any load-bearing, code-sensitive, or safety-critical work before purchasing materials or starting construction. Spotted an arithmetic or standards error? Report it to contact@craftquantities.com with your inputs — a confirmed fix gets a permanent check of its own, so the same mistake cannot come back.

Presented in US customary units and US trade terminology. Where a formula follows a published standard, that standard and its edition are cited beside it on this page; where none governs, the page says so. Local amendments override model codes — verify against the code in force where you build.

Regulatory standards & verification citations

  • 1 roofing square = 100 sq ft; standard 3-tab and architectural shingles use 3 bundles per square
  • Roof surface area = footprint area x slope multiplier, where slope multiplier = sqrt(1 + (rise/12)²) for a given X/12 pitch

Your workspace

Most jobs need more than one number. Add the calculators you need next and they open right here, underneath this one — your figures stay on screen and nothing is lost to a page change.

Frequently asked questions

Why does roof pitch matter for shingle count?
A steeper roof has more actual surface area than its footprint suggests — the same house footprint needs noticeably more shingles at a steep pitch than a shallow one.
How do I find my roof's pitch?
Check your building plans, or hold a level horizontally against the roof and measure how many inches it rises over a 12-inch run.
Does this account for hips, valleys, and dormers?
Not directly — those add complexity and waste beyond this simple footprint-based estimate. Use a higher waste factor (15%+) for roofs with several of these features.
What's a 'square' in roofing?
A roofing square is simply 100 square feet of roof surface — a unit specific to the roofing trade, not a shape.
