Grass Seed Calculator

Estimate how many pounds of grass seed you need, based on lawn area and your seed product's recommended rate.

Computed in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded. Figures are presented for United States against IRC 2024, and every formula is cited under regulatory standards below.

For the dimensions entered, expect a result of 4.31 lb of seed. Note that lawn length and lawn width sit at the edge of the range this calculator was checked against, so treat the output as indicative rather than settled. Set for United States against IRC 2024. Preliminary estimate, not certified engineering. This tool produces an indicative quantity calculation for planning purposes only — it is not a certified structural analysis, a guaranteed material takeoff, or a substitute for building department approval. Always verify measurements on-site and have a licensed contractor or structural engineer review any load-bearing, code-sensitive, or safety-critical work before purchasing materials or starting construction. Spotted an arithmetic or standards error? Report it to contact@craftquantities.com with your inputs — confirmed fixes become pinned regression tests.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't there one universal seeding rate?
Seed size and germination habits vary a lot by grass species — a fine fescue seed is much smaller than a tall fescue or ryegrass seed, so the same weight covers different areas at different densities.
Overseeding vs new lawn — does the rate change?
Yes — overseeding an existing lawn typically uses a lower rate (since some grass is already there) than establishing a completely new lawn from bare soil. Check your product label for both rates.
Does soil prep matter as much as seed quantity?
Very much so — good seed-to-soil contact, consistent moisture, and appropriate timing for your grass type and climate matter as much as getting the seed quantity right.
